Abdominoplasty

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal regions of the body.

By removing excess skin, the procedure results in a tauter abdominal wall and more shapely tummy.

Also, removal of scars and stretch marks in the lower tummy enhances the look of the abdomen. The procedure restores a more youthful appearance to the tummy as a whole.

Women who have experienced one or several pregnancies are often good candidates for abdominoplasty.

Are you dreaming of a flat tummy?

Please feel free to make an appointment to see Dr Chagnon. He will evaluate your physical condition to determine if abdominoplasty is the treatment you need to achieve a flat tummy.

What results can I expect from abdominoplasty?

Removing skin and restoring abdominal tautness enhance your figure and the contours of your midriff. As a result, you can wear more form-fitting clothes and feel better about yourself.

Abdominoplasty, however, is not a method for losing weight. The procedure is intended for people who are in good health, only slightly overweight, and whose extra weight is not the cause of their abdominal bulge.

Please note that several months are required before you can fully appreciate the final results of the procedure. Scars from the operation will fade after a full year.

What happens during the procedure?

The procedure is performed using general anesthesia and lasts two to three hours.

An incision is made in the lower part of the abdomen below the bikini line. A second incision is made to separate the belly button from neighbouring tissue.

Then, the skin is separated from fat on abdominal muscles up to your ribcage. These muscles are brought closer together using sutures; their new position will result in a tighter abdominal wall.

Later, abdominal skin is pulled downward and excess skin and fat are removed. Pulling the skin in this manner reduces the appearance of stretch marks. At the same time, it is also possible to perform liposuction on the lower abdomen.

Generally, drains are removed after two or three days.

Depending on the type of work you do, your convalescence may require two to four weeks.
