What does gynecological cosmetic surgery consist of?
Gynecological cosmetic surgery consists of an ensemble of procedures which aim to improve the overall aesthetic appearance of the genital region. These procedures can be undergone several at a time or individually, depending on a patient’s needs. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, in certain cases, patients will find improvements in the functional, hygienic, and sexual plans as well.
What are the procedures of gynecological cosmetic surgeries?
Labia Minora Reduction (Nymphoplasty):
By far the most frequent and in-demand. In short, this surgery consists of removing the labia minora excess which surpasses the labia majora. If necessary, this procedure will be combined with an excision of the excess skin covering the clitoris, improving the aesthetic result.
Reduction or Augmentation of the Labia Majora:
Depending on necessity, it is possible to either reduce the excess skin of the labia majora, or to augment its volume.
The reduction of the labia majora consists of a simple surgery which will leave minimal scarring between the labia majora and the labia minora.
Labia majora augmentation is done by injecting fat (taken most frequently in the abdominal region) into the skin. Using filling agents, such as hyaluronic acid, is also a possibility. Although this method avoids withdrawing any fat, it is not a permanent solution. It will have a limited effect of approximately one year.
Vaginal Tightening Surgery (Vaginoplasty):
This procedure, also growing in demand, consists of reducing the dimension of the vaginal cavity in order to tighten the vaginal canal.
Depending on the loosening present, the procedure can be done surgically (greater amount of loosening), by laser treatment (lighter amount of loosening), or with a combination of both methods.
Postpartum Perineal Reconstructive Surgery (Perineoplasty, Perineal Repair):
Following childbirth, the perineum (area between the anus and the vulva) may be thinned, or weakened. This contributes to the loosening phenomenon, as well as hygiene issues. In cases such as this one, it is possible to “rebuild” the region. This procedure can be executed with or without the vaginal tightening surgery (vaginoplasty). The procedure itself is relatively simple, and will provide a beneficial effect on the aesthetic, functional, and hygienic plans.
Other Non-Surgical Procedures:
In order to answer to certain needs, there also exists various non-surgical procedures that can be executed individually or combined with surgery.
- Laser treatment can be used for vaginal tightening, whitening, as well as for the tightening of the skin in the vulvar region.
- The platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) treatment may be used to improve the texture of the vaginal mucosa and to promote tightening.
- The injection of filling agents may be used to augment the G-point.
How does the intervention take place?
Depending on the need or the extent of the surgery, the procedure will be done under either local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. These procedures are outpatient surgeries, or ambulatory surgeries, therefore do not require patients to stay at the clinic overnight.
A convalescence period of one to two weeks is necessary. Light to moderate pain can be expected and treated with medication. Swelling will occur for a period of approximately five to seven days. There will also be a required period of abstinence from sexual activities of three to six weeks depending on the case.
